Calf raises target the muscles of the lower leg, primarily the gastrocnemius and soleus. To perform, stand tall with feet hip-width apart, either flat on the ground or with the balls of your feet on an elevated surface. Elevate onto the balls of your feet, pushing through your big toe, and squeeze your calves at the peak of the contraction. Slowly lower your heels back down, allowing for a full stretch at the bottom, potentially dropping below parallel if on an elevated surface. The intent is to build strength and hypertrophy in the calf muscles through a full range of motion.
Skip or adapt this movement if any of these apply — and check with a professional when in doubt.
