A Tempo Run is a sustained effort at a 'comfortably hard' pace held just below your lactate threshold — the fastest pace you can hold while breathing rhythmically and speaking only in short phrases. It trains your body to clear lactate more efficiently, raising the pace you can sustain before fatigue sets in. Hold one steady, controlled effort throughout; do not surge or turn it into a race.
